Aventura Marào Clube: Sport & Disabilities, can they be Mixed?

We know! Sometimes it seems hard to include people with some disabilities or social problems in our daily life. It seems like we are trying but we are constantly failing as a society. But guess what? Sometimes we just complicate stuff! We go round and round trying to find perfect solutions, the perfect way to include everybody, however there is not a perfect answer. In our association, Aventura Marão Clube, we are used to work with people in risk of exclusion or with disabilities. Almost every day actually, and for us it just seems people are more willing to find problems than on just doing it.

Every week, our international volunteers are going to the local disabled center to develop specific activities that are interesting for them and for the clients of the center. In between all the activities they are developing mainly sports activities. The most unprovable stuff you can think we are doing and even better it’s working! Young adults with zero experience in working with people with disabilities are making It work. One of the activities is yoga / relaxation, it might seem not important but, as some of them easily irritated, this is helping them calm down and work on breathing. On the opposite we have Zumba, which is trying to make them move and jump and have fun. Contradictory we know, but both are equally important. Another teenage girl is doing stretching, because you might not know, but most of the people with disabilities suffer with the muscle. All of these activities are done inside the center, in a controlled area, but we took the risk and got them out of their comfort zone and putted them in a kayak in the river. You might think we are crazy but they think of us as a support, as friends and there is no better feeling. If you can ask us if they do and cooperate with all the activities perfectly? No, of course not! But we refuse to give up on them and all this effort and hard work ends up paying off.
